What makes me qualified to talk about healthy living?
I’m still fairly young, in my early 20’s. I’m a skinny guy who never gave much time to eating or living healthy. But I did spend a lot of time eating crap for food, drinking soda pop all day and being lazy. How does that unhealthy lifestyle qualify me to write about health?
Earlier this year (2008), I got pretty sick. Something was wrong with my stomach, and I couldn’t eat for almost a week. I ended up in the emergency room getting all sorts of tests run to see what was wrong with me. 6 hours, and $1,400 dollars later, the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong and sent me home with some Pepcid AC. The most expensive acid reflux medicine I’ve ever had to buy.
When it rains, it pours. After my stomach problem began to disappear, other problems started popping up. Weird chest pains, the flu and blood pressure problems leading to me passing out. All of these problems lasted for about a month and I was afraid something very serious might be wrong.
When I finally started feeling better, I finally decided it was time to change my entire lifestyle. The way I eat, drink, exercise, work and live. I used to eat fast food at least once a day, and the only water I drank was the water in my Dr. Pepper. I would only eat 2 “meals” a day, and drink soda pop the entire day. Exercise was pesky because I could use that time to do work and make money. So was cooking because fast food is, well, fast. Fruits and vegetables were foreign words to me.
Since I turned my life around, I eat 4-5 medium-sized meals a day. I snack on apples, bananas, nuts and granola instead of potato chips and candy. I shop at Vitamin Cottage and buy organic food (meat, fruits, veggies) whenever possible. Water and fruit juice have totally replaced soda pop. I have a juicer I’ll make carrot-apple juice in for another tasty drink. I take vitamins, minerals and a probiotic daily. My transition from crap food to healthy living only took about a week, although I admit it was easier and faster because I was sick.
I should have cared enough to live healthy before I got sick, but getting really sick was the wake up call I needed. I’ve talked to many health experts since then and done countless hours of reading and research about healthy living and healthy food. Knowing what I know now, I’ll never be able to go back to my old way of living, no matter how easy it would be to fall back into that lifestyle. It’s too expensive and harmful to your body than most people realize.
So I created Healthy Life Plans to share my story with you, give you the facts about healthy living and hopefully give you the motivation and information you need to start living a healthier life. It’s not always easy to get on that path, but believe me when I say it’s better to take care of yourself now, instead of waiting until there’s something really wrong with your body.
